Today's human hair market can be very difficult to understand what you are getting.

We at Motown Tress strive to give you a honest high quality product without any misleading hype.  We would like to clarify what good human hair is so you can have confidence next time you choose a human hair product.  Since human hair is a natural organic product, it can only be categorized into brand groups.  Below are broad definitions of human hair, please keep in mind these are not absolute rules, rather generalizations.

* Hair Basics Definitions

Root - The portion of the hair that lies below the skin surface.

Shaft - The portion of the hair that lies above the skin surface.

Bulb - The round ball shape portion of hair that is found at the base of the root.

Cuticle - The outer layer of overlapping proteins that form scales that point away from the root.  Much like scales on a fish.

Keratin protein Chains - Complex protein molecules that are the building blocks of hair.  It is the Keratin that make hair extremely resistant to biological and chemical damage.

Cuticle Stripping - The chemical removal or partial removal of the outer scale like layer of hair shaft.  This is done to prevent tangling of hair due to cuticles facing the opposite directions.  Cuticles lock together much like Velcro when cuticle directions are opposing each other, ie when roots and tips of hairs are mixed together at one end of hair bundle.

Chinese Hair - Hair that is collected from people living in Asia and Southeast Asia.  This hair is usually the thickest and strongest of all types of hairs.  Benefits of this type of hair; it is the best for straight hair styles, thick healthy appearance, hair falls flat and straight with less fly-a-ways, highest resistance of damage from harsh treatment.

Indian Hair - Hair that is collected from people living in India with Indian ethnicity.  Not to be confused with American Indian people.  Benefits of this type of hair; softest to the touch, hair is thin and light, blows freely in a light breeze, curls easily, hair dries in a natural soft wave that can easily be straightened with a flat iron and is easier to color.

Remy - is the collection and processing method of hair that keeps all roots of hair together on one side, insuring that all cuticles are facing downward towards the tips of the hair bundle.  This type of hair last longer because less Cuticle Stripping is needed.

Grade - Depending on who the hair is collected from the hair is separated into different quality levels.  Criteria for categorizing quality levels of hair are; thickness, shine, strength, dryness, split ends, previsouly permed, previously colored, uniformity of thickness along the shaft of hair, and overall healthiness of hair.

Virgin Hair - Hair that has never been processed such as colored, bleahed, straightened or permed.  This hair is usually the healthiest, most beautiful and longest lasting.

Hair Length Ratio - The weight ratio of different length hair mixed together to make one product.  For example, a 4 ounce 10" bundle of hair can be made up of 1.2oz = 30% of 6" - 8" hair, 1.2oz = 30% of 8" - 10" hair, and 1.6oz = 40% of 10" - 11" hair.  Usually inferior products will use less long length hair because it is cheaper to make that way.

* Myths

Myth "The meaning of "REMY" is high quality hair."  Remy is the collection and processing method of hair that keeps most roots of hair together on one side, insuring that most cuticles are facing downward towards to tips of the hair bundle.  This greatly reduces tangling because of cuticle binding.

Generally REMY hair needs less chemical cuticles stripping since most cuticles are facing the same direction.  Less cuticle stripping means hair is thicker in diameter and less damaged.

Depending on who the hair is collected from the quality of REMY hair varies greatly and is separated into different grades.  Best grade is "VIRGIN" which is healthy hair that has never been perm, dyed or chemically treated.

Myth "Hair is made up of living cells."  Hair is made up of non living complex proteins called Keratins.  Keratins are extremely resistant to biological and chemical damage, this is why hair takes decades to decompose.  Hair does not need air, food or water to exist.

Myth "All Remy hair is not processed with chemicals to strip away cuticles."  Actually most human hair products including ones labeled as "REMY" is processed with chemicals to partially or completely stripped away cuticles on the hair.  There are very few human hair products that are not treated with chemicals.

Myth "Virgin Remy hair comes from one person."  This is very rare.  Usually one person's hair is not enough to make on quality wig or hair product.  When hair is cut from a person there are many different lengths of hair within the hair bundle because of this variation it is hard to make consistent hair quality products.  Usually hairs are separated into different length categories and then remixed to make consistent hair length ratios.  This is why many people's hair are used to make one human hair products.

Myth "Indian REMY is not processed to be curly after it gets wet."  Usually True Indian hair only gets slightly wavy after it dries, usually hair is straight at the roots and gets curlier at the tips.  If the hair gets very curly after it dries it probably was permed first then straighten before the product was packaged.  This type of hair could be a mix of all different types of hair.  Best way to tell if it is truly Indian Remy hair is by touching the hair it should be extremely soft to the touch and floats easily in a slight breeze.

Myth "When it says Indian or something similar to Indian the product is made from 100% Indian hair."  Unfortunately this is not the case.  Sometimes hair is a mixture of Indian and Chinese hair to make the product.  Usually if the product is 100% Indian Hair it should get slightly wavy after it dries when wet.  If it get very wavy after it dries it could be because the hair was permed to do so.

Myth "Indian Hair is better than Chinese Hair."  This is a matter of taste.   Generally Indian hair is thinner and softer to the touch.  Some people prefer this feel.  Chinese hair is usually straighter, thicker, and looks great for straight hair styles.
